Day 6: Harrods
Our last day, Afternoon Tea at Harrods.
Whew! We were afraid we weren’t going to get to use our rain gear this trip, but this morning—success! Just drizzle for our Uber to Harrods. Once we had our bearings we took the Tube back.
I had an image in my mind before we saw Harrods, kind of Nieman Marcus on steroids, but completely underestimated. Dave googled it: 1,100,000 sq ft. Seven floors, 300 departments, nothing “regular” that we saw; designer everything. The Tea Room was on the Baby/Children’s floor. Givenchy baby, Prada baby, Burberry baby—forget pedestrian brands like Ralph Lauren. (We did not buy anything here for Harper or Malcolm.) This is the inside of the elevator!
I overheard a woman and her daughter in the Ladies Room. The girl (in a cute English accent) said, “everything is so posh! Even the toilets are posh!”😂
Of course we had to stop at an entire floor (couple of city blocks big) called Shoe Heaven. Corridor after gold corridor of alcoves for each designer. Don’t bother looking for Skechers, they’re not here! Dior, Jimmy Choo, Chanel and so many more. Christian Louboutin’s alcove shown below. There are Louboutin sneakers now with red rubber bottoms for only £695! No, I did not buy any shoes…we did good to afford the Tea which was special, elegant, very chef-y, (gold leaf decoration on the pastries, the kinds of garnish on sandwiches that they put on with tweezers) seriously delicious and priced comparable to two rounds of golf (the experience not comparable at all according to Dave).
I did look at a few price tags in the women’s Casuals department. One straw clutch that would not have held my phone or glasses was £175. This little number below that I’ll bet Sue Boucher could knit for me was £375. (Sue, think of the prices you could get for all those socks you knit that cover more than this.) Yes, I just re-read this and sound as old as I am!
Lazy rain afternoon packing and trying to watch tv. There is just a streaming service here that spends most of the time buffering and the rest of the time randomly shutting off. No worries - I brought my fully-loaded Kindle! And Dave could find us stuff on YouTube.
Tonight we finally got to try a Tapas restaurant that Brian and Rachel recommended: Meson Don Felipe . Place is hopping! Lucky we got a reservation.
Wine/sangria/croquettas/shrimp/jamon and manchego…and churros! I like Brian’s sangria at Aventura better but this was fun and a great recommendation!
Headed to the airport early tomorrow!
Too much downtime today, only 9200 steps!
